10 Phrases Scammers Use In Romance Scams

There are key phrases scammers use on dating sites and apps and that is what we are going to discuss today. I have said this many times, and I will say it again if something doesn’t feel right about the person you are communicating with on a dating site or app, then you need to trust your gut feeling.

What you need to know is that romance scam is a multi-billion dollar business with people losing millions every year. If you keep these phrases scammers use in your mind when you are surfing dating sites, you could save yourself a lot of pain and money.

Let’s Get Started On Phrases Scammers Use Dear

OK, the first thing you need to do is analyze how the person talks to you depending on where they claim to be from. For example, if the person claimed to be from the US, and you are also from the US, you know very well how you guys talk over there. If someone keeps calling you dear my dear, I have spoken to many Americans, and I don’t think they are in the habit of using dear when they talk.

Although romance scams have become very sophisticated thanks to technology, there are things that will alert you and that is why you need to be very aware of everything even as you search for love online. And don’t let the accent fool you either, these days there are online tools that can be used to change someone’s voice and accent.

Babe, Have You Eaten?

I have no idea why they are so interested in your eating habits but they are. And speaking of babe, when you are chatting with someone online, don’t be so excited that they choose to call you babe, honey, my love, or whatever pet names that they call you.

Be more excited when they use your name because that means they know who they are currently talking to. Let me explain. Most of the messages that the scammers send you are also sent to hundreds of other people, so to make it easier, they just use pet names that way the message can be sent to anyone.

Miss Spelled Texts

Believe it or not, they use miss-spelled text on purpose, if you overlook the mistakes on the text, then they know you are hooked. I have actually mentioned this before. If you see a miss-spelled word or poor grammar, you must call it out. The truth is these people are highly educated and they know how to play mind games with you.

Besides, if someone is telling you that they are American and they are stranded in Afghanistan because they work in the military, how is it that they would use poor grammar when texting you?

Phrases Scammers Use I am Deployed In Afghanistan

Military romance scams are very popular because they are easy to pull off. I mean if one is deployed in Afghanistan, they will not be able to travel to come see you. Also, there are many things that can happen when one is in the military. Actually, this kind of romance scam is the most  Heart retching because you feel a sense of duty too.

I mean you want to help your marine lover at all cost, so when he tells you that he has been abducted and he needs money for ransom to be released, you will do whatever it takes to get that money.

But I need you to ask yourself this question if he is indeed abducted, how come he chooses to reach out to you instead of his superiors? I mean they would be in a better position to rescue him than you are.

Most Romantic Poems

Copy-paste poems that melt your heart, the truth is those poems you can find them on the internet word for word, so they are not as special as you think they are. I mean don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with sending someone a poem even if you found it on the internet.

The problem with romance scams, you could be in deep conversation with someone, and you ask them a question, then instead of answering the question, they send you a long copy-pasted poem that has nothing to do with the conversation you were having earlier.

My Mother Just Had An Accident And Had To Be Rushed To The Hospital

OK, it could be any member of the family but for this example let’s use mother. First of all, I am not saying that if you are talking to someone on the internet and they mention that someone in their family had an accident that they are a scammer. These things do happen.

And if I may be honest, there was a time I was communicating with someone on a dating site and I found out that I had a serious medical condition that required emergency surgery, I did not tell that person because I did not want them to think I was a scammer.

I went to the hospital and I was not able to communicate for three days, and when I was able to, I didn’t even tell them that I was in the hospital.

Phrases Scammers Use  I have A Visa I Just Need Money For Ticket

If you are talking to someone who claims to be in Africa or Asia, They will need a visa to come and visit you in America, Canada Europe, or other parts of the western world. Now what you need to know is that getting a visa is not that easy.

As a matter of fact, for them to apply for a visitor’s visa, they will need an invitation letter from you, and they also need to prove that they are stable economically to be able to cater for the trip and, also they must show proof that they do not intend to settle in your country. They need to prove that they have ties in their home country.

Even if they send you a picture of a passport with a visa on it, don’t trust them, these days anything can be photoshopped. The best thing would be to call the embassy and enquire about the visa, you can easily find contacts for any embassy on Google.

If You Loved Me You Would Send Me The Money

Honestly, how do people fall for this one? You do not need to prove your love by sending someone some money, especially someone you haven’t even met, and actually haven’t even had a video chat with.

Remember once you send the initial amount of money, you are in trouble, it does not matter how small the amount is. Romance scams work by getting you to send the initial amount of money, then you will have no way out, it’s downhill from there.

Can You Send Me Some Money Babe I Need To Upgrade My Phone

Usually, this happens when you ask them to facetime you or video call you. Even if you give in and send the money, chances are you will not see them on a video call, they will send you a pre-recorded video clip probably from a porn site, and then they will say their internet is unstable.

They will also ask for gift cards usually Google Play or iTunes, they would ask you to scratch the card and send them a picture of the scratched card. Usually, they would claim it’s for updating their phone so they can send you pictures and videos.

You need to understand that you are probably talking to a bunch of people and that is why the conversation never flows. I mean you could give a lot of information about yourself and then you will notice that the questions you are getting are the questions you have already answered.

I am In Trouble Babe Have Been Arrested And Need Money To Pay Fine

Although this could actually happen, I mean one could find themselves on the wrong side of the law unexpectedly. But it has been used to scam people of their hard-earned money.

Yes in some places especially in African countries people can get arrested, especially if you find yourself in the midst of riots, and it’s hard to prove that you were not one of the rioters, which means whatever fine the rioters will be fined, you have to pay.

But this is a straight forward situation, there will be official papers to prove that indeed you have to pay a fine. So it’s only a matter of being diligent and asking for proof, and again make sure the documents are not fake. Also, your relationship must be to a point where you know the person you are talking to, and have been continually doing video chats with.

Conclusion

Romance scams are very painful to the victims and most victims suffer in silence because they are ashamed. But there is no need to be ashamed, you did nothing wrong, and besides the scammers are very sophisticated and very good at what they do. So the best thing to do is try as much as you can to avoid them.
